For Dennis and Lela, volunteering is more than something they do. It’s a reflection of who they are. As Foster Grandparents at a local elementary school, they bring joy, encouragement, and meaningful connections to students every day.
Their journey with the Foster Grandparent Program began five years ago when Lela stepped in to help after another volunteer became ill. Dennis was already involved, and what started as an opportunity to serve quickly became a shared passion. Today, they spend their mornings reading with students, offering guidance, and simply being a caring presence. “Sometimes I’m impatient to get started,” Lela says. “I treasure it.”
Dennis, who first began volunteering in school reading labs in 2011, has a special gift for connecting with children who are struggling. Known for his gentle leadership, quick sense of humor, and signature clown nose, he finds creative ways to brighten students’ days. Before a recent surgery, the children made him a sign wishing him well. In return, he wore his clown nose into the operating room because, as he says, laughter has a way of bringing joy to everyone.
Lela shares that same spirit of encouragement through her nurturing nature and love of learning. She often carries a world map and enjoys showing students the many places they might one day explore. Her goal is simple: to spark curiosity, inspire learning, and help every child feel valued and seen.
Together, Dennis and Lela have dedicated their lives to serving others. They believe giving back is both a privilege and a responsibility, and that the rewards often exceed what they give. “You see you’re helping, and that makes you feel good,” Dennis says. “You get to be part of a community. You experience happiness, love, and connection.”
Their message to others is simple: be part of something bigger than yourself. Find ways to help, however you can. Whether through a small act of kindness or a long-term commitment, bringing joy to someone else’s life can make all the difference.
